storage cart

We moved a couple of years ago and I no longer have nearly as much available shop space. I needed a mobile work surface that would also serve as storage for tools and shop supplies. I already had a bunch of bins that I wanted to use so I designed the table around those bins. I modeled the whole thing in Autodesk Fusion, created a cut list for my local steel yard, and then sat on the project for nearly a year because I didn’t have good enough power in the shop to weld it up (oops).

I recently got a hybrid truck capable of acting as a generator and supplying 240v at 30A - plenty for my welder. I picked the project back up again and I’m very pleased with how it is coming together.

  • frame constructed from 1” square steel tubing with 1/8” thick walls

  • 2 1/4” thick work surface made from blemished maple-backed plywood overhangs the panels for clamping and larger surface area

  • two shelves of same plywood to accommodate eight large pick bins and three larger tubs

  • five Wall Control metal pegboard panels for hanging goods and small bins

  • locking wheels

I want to keep the surface flush for working with large sheets of material or fabrics but there are a few things I’d still like to do with it. I might add some dog holes for task lighting or perhaps miter tracks/T-tracks for tool guiding/surface clamping.
