nerf blaster

My kid was absolutely obsessed with the Nexus Pro X. So I told him if he bagged up all the dog crap in the yard and vacuumed the cars, we'd hop over to Walmart and get him one. To my amazement, he did it. And when I read up on the specs, it looked like a great blaster and I've always kinda wanted to try making a prop replica blaster like this so we came home with two of them. I love the black/white/orange color scheme you see a lot in in sci-fi so here's what I did. Also, don’t do this. People get hurt and die playing with prop replicas because people think they are real weapons. Don’t do this:

  • Disassembled the whole thing

  • Sanded all the external surfaces (a nylon rotary cup brush makes short work of this

  • Sanded off all text

  • Spray primed all parts with primer suitable for ABS (black parts black primer; white parts, white primer)

  • Multiple coats of acrylic model spray paint

  • Dry brushed silver on the black edges for metal look, black on white edges

  • Additional layers of clear matte acrylic spray

  • Ditched the side rails

  • Added a 3D printed side plate. The fit isn't perfect but it's not bad. I can provide a CAD model if anyone wants it.

  • Added 3D printed Talon mag

  • $15 Pinty illuminated reticle on top

Things I wish I had thought through a little better:

  • I should have masked the trigger and mag release mechanisms before painting. They work fine but the acrylic on the releases in particular makes them a bit sticky. I will need to open it up again and clean them off.

  • The spring tube is a pretty tight fit. It could still be painted but one really needs to sand it down to a sloppy fit before adding a layer of paint. It works but the pink shows through a bit now.

All in all, super happy with it. Great little blaster and an amusing project. Plus, now I know I can get my kid to clean up after the dog if there's sufficient motivation.
